Councillor Martin Farren, Cathaoirleach of Inishowen, has highlighted a shortage of Gardai in the peninsula and the resulting illegal use of disabled parking bays.

Speaking at the recent Inishowen Municipal District meeting, the Labour councillor said motorists are regularly parking in designated disabled spots, particularly at the play park in Moville, and there are no Gardai available to enforce the rules.

Farren recounted contacting the Gardaí after an incident in Moville at the weekend, only to be told that no officers were stationed in the town on a Saturday night and none would arrive until Sunday. He was also told that officers could not be dispatched from Buncrana.

The councillor asked whether the council’s roads section has any remit to address illegal disabled parking, and appealed to the public to stop the practice, describing it as “disrespectful and terrible” because the bays are intended to provide easy access for people with disabilities.
