The Metropolitan Police are investigating a fresh allegation that former Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson, 63, raped a woman in the Houses of Parliament in 2016.

The Met said the report was passed on by the Police Service of Northern Ireland and received on Tuesday 13 October. The allegation concerns a single victim who is being supported by specialist officers.

The investigation is described as being in its early stages; no arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

Donaldson was earlier this month sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for a series of historical sexual offences against two women when they were children, including one count of rape, 13 counts of indecent assault and four counts of gross indecency committed between 1985 and 2008. Following his conviction he was stripped of his knighthood and removed from the Privy Council, and his solicitor has confirmed that an appeal has been lodged.
