Two people were killed and two others injured after a vehicle struck pedestrians taking part in a community walk marking Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Tsawwassen First Nation land in British Columbia.
The collision occurred at about 10:25 local time (16:25 BST) in a parking lot south of Vancouver, near the US‑Canada border, according to the Delta Police Department. Police said the driver may have been experiencing a medical emergency and do not believe the incident is linked to the Truth and Reconciliation day event.
Delta Police are investigating the scene and have asked residents to avoid the area. The two injured were taken to hospital for treatment. More than a dozen ambulances responded, eyewitnesses reported.
The walk, scheduled from 09:30 to 13:00, was part of a national holiday that honours victims and survivors of Canada’s residential schools. Canada has observed the day since 2021 following the discovery of unmarked burial sites at former schools.
Canada’s energy minister, Tim Hodgson, attended the walk earlier in the day, but a spokesperson confirmed he was not near the incident when it occurred.
