64‑year‑old Irish tourist dies after water incident at Portugal beach

A 64‑year‑old Irish man died on 26 September after getting into difficulty in the water at Prainha beach in Alvor, Portimão, Portugal.

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) said the alert was raised just before 10.40 am, after the man entered an unsupervised area of the beach. Members of the SeaWatch project, the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) and the Portimão Volunteer Firefighters were dispatched.

When rescuers arrived, members of the public had already pulled the victim from the water and lifeguards were attempting resuscitation. Despite INEM’s arrival, he was declared dead at the scene.

Portugal’s Maritime Police confirmed the incident and activated its Psychology Department to support the victim’s family. The body was transferred to the Medical‑Legal and Forensic Office of Barlavento Algarvio.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland acknowledged the case and is providing consular assistance, noting it does not comment on individual details.
